Dr. Shelley Cathrea-Roy, CCSP, CSCS

Dr. Cathrea-Roy, is a Belltown based Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. This makes her uniquely qualified to work with active patients, their related injuries and training needs. The Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician program is an intensive, year long post-graduate degree program. She has also completed extensive post-graduate training in the treatment of patients who have been in motor vehicle accidents.

Dr. Cathrea-Roy utilizes her extensive educational and clinical background to bring you a diverse range of chiropractic, rehabilitation, manual therapy, nutrition, exercise counseling and sports chiropractic techniques. This allows her to focus on not only treating what ails you, but teaching you how to stay pain free. She does not prescribe extensive treatment plans; however, she does use longer appointment times to ensure that you are getting all of the care you need. Areas of injury treated include the TMJ, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot in addition to neck and back pain.

Dr. Cathrea-Roy has been living and practicing in Seattle since 2001, moving here via Vancouver, BC, Toronto, ON, and Portland, OR. As a Canadian, she appreciates being able to practice close to home and as an outdoor enthusiast, she can't think of a better place to live than the Pacific Northwest. She is an active participant in the community, volunteering at various athletic activities throughout the year. She was the co-president of the Washington State Chiropractic Association's Sports Council and worked with them to coordinate chiropractic care at various sporting events. She coordinated finish line medical support at the Seattle Marathon from 2002-2005 and returned to the event in 2007. In December 2006, she worked with Executive Women International and Page Ahead to help promote children's literacy in local area schools. She was voted one of the top chiropractors in the country for 2004 by the Consumer Research Council of America and is a contributing editor on the patient education book “Clarifying Terms”. She was also the "Volunteer of the Year" for 2005 for the Washington State Chiropractic Association. She is a member of Surfrider and Snowrider, where she not only volunteers her chiropractic services, but helps to keep the beaches and mountains clean.

Recently, Dr. Cathrea-Roy has been working with the Puget Sound Titans Semi-Pro football team in 2008 as their medical director and team chiropractor.

Personally, she has run three marathons since 2002 and continues to challenge herself athletically. Most recently, she has learned to surf and snowboard. She regularly uses all of these activities as an excuse to travel.

Tucker Roy: L.M.P., surfer

A little about myself before you decide to let some 6'5” punk in flip-flops invade your personal space...

I grew up on the not so mean streets of Newport Beach, California. Raised on surfing and skateboarding, I learned to appreciate the body's sense of balance and symmetry. You'll never understand the body's incredible sense of proprioception until you're flying upside down and backwards alongside a skate ramp. Learning such maneuvers also brought to my attention how painful my passion for extreme sports is. With each new trick learned, a new scar, bruise or mouthful of sand gained. Not until I took up motorcycles and snowboarding did I notice the lingering effects of the “learning process” belonging to these high velocity sports.

Finally, after a wake-boarding spill, I sought out a massage therapist. This being my first massage, I did not know what to expect. I was happy to find out he was a guy roughly my same age and a fellow snowboarder. It was easy to communicate my needs and talk freely about my health issues; I was back in business in a few treatments. Not being fond of medications, I was so relieved to be functioning again without having to get on the Western medicine merry go round (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Shortly after that, I was involved in a motorcycle accident. Having benefited from my last tour of alternative medicine, I looked up the local chiropractor. That's where I met Dr. Cathrea and we lived happily ever after. Actually, that is another story; it's much more entertaining. The chiropractic care was top shelf. From shooting pain down to my knee to a localized ache in, three sessions supplemented with a few massage appointments was all it took. Once again I felt at ease talking about my situation, and for the first time got to take an interactive role in my healing. Having such success with chiropractic and massage care, ad the atmosphere of being able to converse directly and openly with a skilled health professional really appealed to me, I felt it was time to hang up my board shorts for a while and try this as a career.

At Brenneke School of Massage, I took additional courses in sports injury treatment, reflexology, pregnancy massage, and lymphatic drainage technique. As well as learning Eastern medicine philosophy courses, extensive courses in hydrotherapy, and a weekend learning spa and aromatherapy treatments, I was exposed to many metaphysical, somatic presencing and “Woo-woo” or other types of practices. I strategically chose these courses not because I want to work on exclusively pregnant clients nor see the color emanating from your aura. But, put these courses together and you can treat patients with pulmonary trouble much like those who are pregnant (as neither are able to lay face down on the table). You can also read more into the pains that are expressed verbally and often non-verbally from a client.

I hope all my clients feel they can share their views on what they think is going on with their body. Together we can come up with the best plan for treatment. Whether it is a deep relaxation massage or working loose a masseter or temporalis before a TMJ adjustment with one of my favorite chiropractors, I hope to instill comfort and confidence with my clients decision in making me and our clinic their answer to better health.
